The name of Paharpur has taken from a high mound that looked like pahar or hillock.Paharpur is considered as the Largest Buddhist Seat of Learning in South Asia . It is a small village in Rajshahi.It is about 5 km west of Jamalganj in the Rajshahi district. There remains of the most important and the largest known monastery south of the Himalayas . An area covering about 11 hectare was found by the 7th century AD archaeologist. It is a quadrangular court measuring above 900 ft. The entire establishment is like a Quadrangular court and it measures more than 300 meters which varies from 3.5 to 4.5 meters in height .It also has an elaborate gateway complex on the north. In the north side there are 45 cells and 44 cells in each of the other three sides, with an entire number of 177 rooms. The architectural beauty of Paharpur influences the people of Mayanmar and Java.
